Best of Kosher in LA!!!

Rather then talk about one particular restaurant, I though it would be fun to compile a personal “best of” list of Kosher foods, restaurant dishes, etc. that I think are great. Try out my picks and see if you agree.

Best (restaurant) at what they do
1) Jeff’s Gourmet Sausage – New Yorkers drool over this LA jem. I can’t think of a bad thing they make
2) Fish Grill – there’s a good reason why there are now 3 of them, such a simple concept – grill super fresh fish over real coals (not gas) and complement it with quick tasty sides
3) Pat’s – best run restaurant I’ve ever seen. Want to substitute something? No problem. Send it back? No problem. Awesome desserts, friendly service. David is amazing. If only they'd update the menu a bit more...

Dessert
1) Pat’s Chocolate Decadence – I’m not a huge chocolate guy but this is hands down the best desert in town, nothing is even close including dairy
2) Pat’s Chocolate Bread Pudding – amazing, ask anyone who has had it
3) Pat’s Strawberry Tart – I know it doesn’t seem fair but Pat’s sweeps the category

Meat / Steak
1) Tierra Sur (winery) Aged Ribey – If you taste it, you know it is different then any other kosher steak in SoCal
2) Pat’s Baca Grande – When it’s good, this prime rib for two is awesome. The onions and 3 dipping sauces are perfect additions
3) Shilo’s ribeye – solid, solid, solid

Pizza
1) La Pizza – arguably the best kosher slice in America, New York doesn’t come close
2) Pizza Maven – damn good pizza, perfect crust, ample cheese, could use a bit more flavor
3) Shalom Pizza – read my review

Pasta Dishes
1) Pat’s Bolognese – a delicious homey dish that will make you feel like curling up next to a fire place
2) Milk n Honey cheese ravioli in pink sauce - my wife’s obsession, very tasty
3) Pizza Station Baked Ziti – you might think I’m crazy but it is very good, with crusty cheese generously coating the top and a tasty marinara sauce inside

Sushi
1) Café Bonjour crunchy white fish roll – mortgage brokers drive from West LA weekly for this dish, need I say more?
2) Shanghai Caterpillar Roll – takes forever but is worth the wait

Kosher Markets
1) Kosher Club – best shopping experience, wide aisles, good meat section, best wine selection in the city
2) Western – best and freshest meat
3) Elat Market – possibly the cheapest produce in the country

Israeli Restaurant Dish
1) On Fire Grill Shakshuka – I’ve had it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Freakin delicious!
2) Haifa Beef Shishlik – tender chunks of beef flame broiled to perfection, not sure why nobody else makes it as good
3) King David Shwarma – generous ratio of lamb to turkey, you’ll think you’re at the bus station in Tel Aviv

Fish
1) Fish Grill Sea Bass – my favorite from a menu where you can’t really go wrong
2) On Fire Grill Mahi Mahi – super fresh, lightly seasoned, fish they way it was meant to be eaten
3) Fish Grill Fish n Chips – classic, shmeared with tartar sauce it is soooo good yet soooo many points

Bagel
1) Bagel Factory
2) La Brea Bagel
3) Western Bagel

Danish/Pastry
1) Delice Butter Croissant – not consistent (the owner attributes it to the weather) but when they are good, there is no better pastry in LA
2) Elat Custard Danish – very large amount of custard on soft pillowy pastry
3) Schwartz Cinnamon Crumb Danish – not to be mixed up with their other cinnamon danish that isn’t that good, only available on select days, must be fresh

Chinese Dish
1) Kolah Farangi Sesame Chicken – delicately battered in sweet sauce that is not nauseating
2) Shanghai Diamond Mandarin Chicken – delicately battered in slightly spicy sauce
3) Shanghai Diamond String Bean Beef – typical stirfry in brown sauce but the string beans are great without any of the annoying vegis you find in Chinese dishes

Burger
1) La Gondola Mushroom Onion Burger – a delicious ½ pound patty overflowing with sautéed mushrooms and onions. Add some ketchup and mayo and you’ll be rocking
2) Pat’s Burger – perfectly shaped, consistent, juicy. It could be on TV
3) Greta Burger OB”M – thick patty topped with a sunny side up egg and spicy harisa, it is missed by many

Salad Dressing
1) Pizza Maven Green Dressing – possibly pure nostalgia but I’ve never had another dressing like it… what makes it green???
2) Circa Balsamic – thick, creamy, tasty… could be bottled and sold at retail easily
3) Pizza World Creamy Italian – tastes a bit like tehini, very original flavor, excellent on cheese topped salads

Appetizer
1) La Gondola Avocado Egg roll – so good that numerous other restaurants copied them yet theirs is still by far the best (sorry Chani)
2) Shanghai Garden Minced Chicken in Lettuce Cup – doesn’t sound good but tastes great. It’s kind of a lettuce burrito filled with tasty chicken and hoisin sauce. Atkins friendly.
3) Bonjour Stuffed Mushrooms – deep fried and covered with mayonaise, a total artery clogger

Chicken Soup
1) Bravo Bistro – first time I had fresh chunks of juicy white meat chicken that were added to the soup after it was made, incredibly good
2) Magic Carpet – kind of odd for a Yemenite restaurant to excel at such an Ashkenaz dish but it is one of their signature dishes
3) La Gondola – solid soup made the real way, no mix or cubes in this puppy

I’m gonna end it here as there is more then enough to generate a few comments and I need to get to bed. Enjoy.

Danny - i don't know about pat's and la gondola - but jeff's is the best burger period.

Jeff's burger is comparable to great treif burgers and they get it! the mayo and burger pickles make the burger explode with flavor - i can't believe you missed this one.....shame on you.

do a review on french fries.

I think Metro Glatt has the best burger!

Prime Grill is throwing it down with a great dessert menu. Their Sliders (mini burgers) are insane and their spicy tuna on crispy rice is orgasmic. Pizza Station throws down a solid lazagna ask for it well done and they make a delicious taco plate as well. Malawa at Magic Carpet is quite authentic.
The Yoni Aviv special is the thing to order at Jeff's gourmet...but only the true customers know to order that.

La Pizza pasta and brocolli is what legends are made out of...get it with a side of cheese garlic bread, it will be sure to take 5 years off your life but worth it.

Oxnard is what heaven looks like. You cant go wrong with anything at that place...so gourmet...so real...so mmmmm delicioso.

Milk N' Honey has incredible mozzarella sticks, do it and do it now. There pizza is also solid.

Bibi's is all about the yummy and all about the diarhea. If you want to play it safe go for the Greek Salad.

Pico cafe-the owner is a cheap ass Israeli prick. Stay away. If you must go then dont try and subsitute anything...you will have to get a 2nd on your home to pay for it.

Circa-Get the pancakes...best in L.A. best kosher ever.

Bagels- You forgot to mention Nathan's kosher land on Westwood Blvd. They make a great bagel. Its a good thing they expanded the place was always packed.

Shanghai- Crispy shreaded beef.

Pizza World- Good pizza great creamy Italian dressing.

That's all for now.

circa- best waffles in town (crisp on the outside perfectly soft on the inside and it doesnt even need syrup)

pkd- best matza ball/chicken soup

danny u forgot abt the dessert at the winery, hello churros?

Anonymous said...

good call on the Nathan's Bagels, probably the best in LA. the churros at the winery are great but I don't know if they still have them on the menu.

Just looking through quickly and the sushi doesn't seem be right. I have the white fish crunch roll a least once a week and it is pretty good. You have to try the Le sushi Jalapeno roll and Hawaiian roll with the inside replaced to spicy tuna. Also a bit surprised to not see any Prime Grill steaks. I had
the Angus again last night... pretty good!

HEY DANNY,
I'M SURE YOU DON'T DO THESE FOR CHUCKLES BUT....I LOVE IT.
GOOD FOR YOU AND KOSHER RESTARAUNT AWARENESS.
WHERE IS KOSHER CLUB?

Kosher Club is on Pico a few blocks west of La Brea on the North side of the street.

I don't know where to start because i was very into it in the past (now that i lost 75 lbs. so far, i don't go into these joints anymore) however from what i do know i would like to comment on it.

Regarding Pizza, i must agree with you, i have been telling people long long ago that shalom pizza is by far the best pizza on the west coast, 2nd best is maybe pizza nosh in agoura, now what i don't understand is that pizza mayven makes the 2nd to your list? pullizeeee..... every time i had that pizza it was horrible and not very consistent. la Pizza - arguably the best kosher slice in America? new york dosen't come close???? what tops fresh hot pizza straight out of the oven at J 2 Pizza on Broadway in Manhattan???

Regarding meat/ steak, im a bigger fan of Pat's over La Gondola although the avo spring rolls and the Chai steak are pretty good, i have not been to shilos yet so i can't comment, tierra sur is pretty good but its a long drive and when you go to a winery i like to sample some wines but if im the DD - designated driver, its not easy for my wife rather me drive at night on the freeway. however prime grill i know the service isn't great, im sure that they will figure that out over time, but if you want to refinance or take out a mortgage for your dinner then prime grill is by far the best steak in town, and their sushi is pretty good.

Regarding pasta, before kosushi went down the drain when the French guy owned it the four cheese penne pasta was owsome, now you can get it in milk n honey, but not very consistent, sometimes its soggy and tasteless. but if you want to get lazanga the milky way is da bomb.

Fsh, the fish grill is the best, good priced fresh and simple however if you want to get the best fish dish ever to be served is the peanut butter tai fish fry at the Milky Way.

Sushi, #1. prime grill, # 2. Cafe Bonjour, # 3. la sushi, # 4. Shanghai.

Deserts, you are on the ball -- Pats is great the lemon pie is my favorite.

Burgers, i don't know when i go to the nice places im not really ordering a burger i want a steak however the way you described the La Gondola union and mushroom burger it makes me tempted to give it a try. but when you go to n.y. you can get a serious 1/2 pounder triple bypass burger at wolf and lamb for a good price and L.A. should learn from their portion sizes it comes with a big salad French fries and they are gigantic (no wonder why America is 60% obese)

Regarding French fries, its very simple if they are cut fresh they are great (think fish grill), if they are frozen its a sin.

Israeli, habait a small place on pico in Santa Monica, my favorite orange delight in the valley, Sassi's, or Golan in the valley.

Salad, the best salad is the south western salad with chicken strips and get it with the teryaki sauce at Orange Delight.

Chinese, in no other words i'm still mourning the great loss of Shalom Cuisine OB"M that was on Fairfax-- it was the best place in California from the price to the menu and the food, simply the best Chinese period.

Malibu beach grill, home to the best chicken wings and chicken strips with the best dipping sauces.

Bakery's here suck. nothing like zommicks Bakery in Long Island and shicks Bakery in Boro Park in New York.

Now Danny one thing you need to touch upon is the stuff the restaurants give you before you order like in Pat's the chibada bread and Olive garlic dip, orange delight home made corn chips and salsa, my favorite at golan's they give you hot pita techina red hot stuff and good pickles its a meal for itself

We really love the sizzling rice soup at Shanghai and the Malawa at Magic Carpet is the best (fattening but the best). By the way, the Gravlox appetizer at Shilo's is delicious

We had a huge party at Pat's with a huge bill. Server spilled wine on my brother. I think at that point they should of comped something, but instead they told us we needed to bring them the dry cleaning bill for any sort of compensation (and any sort of apology, I guess). Could of been handled better.

We need a good chick'n and waffles place. Roscoe's for the yid. Power to the people.

Dan,
I have to agree La Pizza has and will continue to be the best Pizza in LA since the Demise of the ORIGINAL Kosher Nostra which had an annoying owner but great food.

As to Sushi, The Valley wins hands down, Le Sushi and Cafe Bonjour kill the LA joints, but I reserve final judgement until I have an excuse to go to the Prine again and be gouged for a meal.

Of the new crew of restauraunts I have to say the Shilo's has impressed me the most and is fairly priced.

You really need to get out to the valley and try someof the new places out there to let us know.

As for the group just remember a Critic is giving you his opinion not one you HAVE to accept but his opinion. The idea in a blog is to voice yours as well.

The best idea I have seen here is from the other Dan, MR THe Ferzt (cute I like it) we need a Roscoes for the Jewish folkes. Waffles and fried chicken YUM. anywho thats JMTW

Great work Danny...I have to say you are right on about most restaurants but I'm shocked you did not include prime grill uder best meats.

We went to Circa and I have to say it leaves a lot to be desired. We had an average eggs; the potatoes were not worth the money or time and we were really disappointed.

I was there last week and had a grilled "cheese" sandwich. To say that the "cheese" was sparse would be an understatement.

I love the idea and I love the location but come on...this isn't New York.

Delice, on the other hand, makes great eggs, better potatoes and really good grilled cheese sandwiches. Worth every penney!

Hey Anonymous you are a big time fag. In the words of the iron sheik "I am going to humble you".
You dont know anything about food. Circa throws it down and Delice is a bunch of arrogant French losers.
Circa has fluffy pancakes, Delice serves French Toast with honey(syrup not avail). Circa has many choices of delicious sandwiches including a great tuna sandwich... Delice puts raisins in their tuna-YUCK!
Circa has pastries that taste like pastries. Delicious danishes and cakes. Especially the cheese blintz...the greatest. Delice has fruit and custard on everything they serve its small and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced.
Hey frogs go back to France, we dont want you here.

Danny - you have lost credibility with me. I ate Shalom Pizza for the first time in my life on Saturday night and it sucked. Not only did I think it sucked, but roughly 12 out of 14 other hungry men thought it disgusting. It was tasteless, had very little sauce, and rumbled around in our stomachs like a rat caught in a washing machine. Thank goodness we had a stripper, ok fine - a princess, deliver a birthday cake to improve the night's food situation.

When you claim to know a lot about food, but over 85% of people think the food is horrible - your credibility is tarnished. I hope you can build it back up, but it will take a lot after this massive blemish.

Your determination and effort is admirable. However, you have lost a loyal fan... for now.

LA Pizza might have the best Pizza in the world, Their kasrhus has what to be desired.

There is never a Mashgiach around and they have been seen in the store on numerous occasions on Shabbos. if it were under a real Hechsher like Kehilla, or RCC, they would have lost the Hechsher many times over.......

It's sad that the whole world eats there, and no one cares about the kashrus.

For good Valley Pizza, brami's in tarzana makes some good stuff, and their cheesecake is AWsOME!!!!
